My baby cries and fights in his sleep?

My baby is nearly 5 weeks old, sometimes when he is about to wake up he fights and scrathes himself to wake up. (ive had to resort to scratch mitts - as he wakes up with a red face) Its very heartbreaking to see. Is he having a nightmare? He also cries in his sleep, ive heard this is normal but the fighting is terrible....
