in's Creed 2, do the cities evolve?

I'm playing in's Creed 2 and I just arrived in Venice for the first time and the city is tiny and looks like crap. In the videos online though, it looks really nice and extravagant. So I was just wondering since the game covers a 30 years period of time if the cities change over time.
